Mushrooms by Sylvia Plath The metrical composition is written in el mend stanzas make out of three lines each. It has no fixed hoarfrost object and uses alliteration, assonance and repetition. The whole poem is a metaphor. The mushrooms represent the women in the 50s and 60s before their rights were established. Mushrooms appear overnight, growing and expanding quickly. W omen did not appear all of a sudden overnight but they had been ignored for so long that when they began to entreat for their rights there abruptly appeared to be numerous of them. Mushrooms are also seemingly harmless, fair bid women were thought to be, but many of them can be poisonous, sometimes even deadly and are underestimated the same way women were before.

Sylvia Plath also explores the thought that women were treated like furniture. This idea is repeated on several occasion throughout the poem. The first acknowledgement of this idea is the line Earless and eyeless. They are senseless, a piece of f urniture. The line which follows also reflec! ts this idea of them being furniture. Women were expect to be Perfectly verbalizeless . They had to be the perfect housewife, construe after their children and husbands, cook delicious meals, bully the house and to that degree they were expected to have no opinions whatsoever, lots less voice them and express them. This idea is clearly uttered when she says We are shelves, we are Tables.
