College versus Education Nowadays, almost every high school graduates go to college to pursue further degrees. It has been considered as a norm to go to college such that if you do not, some people will most likely think that you will not succeed. On the other hand, other people think that college is not worth it; it waste the time, money, and does not do any good to college students. I believe that The data from the Economic Policy Institute especially telling because the institute makes a point of arguing that education is not the solution to all of the economy’s problems. College graduates, like almost everyone else, are suffering from the economy’s weak growth and from the disproportionate share of this growth flowing to the very richest households. The average hourly wage for college graduates has risen only 1 percent over the last decade, to about $32.60. The pay gap has grown mostly because the average wage for everyone else has fallen — 5 percent, to about $16.50. From the country’s perspective, education can be only part of the solution to our economic problems. We also need to find other means for lifting living standards — not to mention ways to provide good jobs for people without college degrees. But from almost any individual’s perspective, college is a no-brainer. It’s the most reliable ticket to the middle class an d beyond. Nuclear Holocaust Essay Nuclear testing was a global issue during the 1960s. With threats of nuclear war from the communist countries of the Russia, Cuba and China, the United States was anxious to protect itself with a nuclear arsenal of its own. After the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end World War II, the United States did additional nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands, Nevada and New Mexico. General knowledge of nuclear radiation was minimal to the public at that time and the United States government could not warn their citizens about the dangerous effects of exposure to nuclear radiation. The diseases and disorders that arose as result of nuclear testing could have been prevented if the government of the United States had advised people about radiation and had implemented a mandatory evacuation around the test areas. The technology of nuclear testing was relatively new and unexplored during the late 40s and early 50s. In October 1946, United States president Harry Truman assumed the responsibilities of the Atomic Energy Commission, or the AEC, and appointed five men to serve on the AEC on an interim basis (Ball 22). However, into Trumans second term as president, Russia implied to the world that they were developing a nuclear arsenal. This led to two major American decisions which were unanimously backed by Truman: to construct a super bomb and to develop a major atomic weapons testing facility in the continental United States (Ball 24). With the news of Russia successfully testing a nuclear device in 1949, Congress expanded the funding of the AEC to $1.5 billion dollars. The United States also discovered that the Russians had received information about the Manhattan Project from spies who had worked at the Los Alamos plant. By June 1950, the United States and Russias nuclear arms race escalated to a new high with the outbreak of the Korean War (Ball 24, 25, 27). The AEC rushed in response to Russias nuclear device. Shot Harry, the name for the ninth nuclear test at the Nevada test site, was scheduled to be tested on May 2, 1953 but was postponed when a previous nuclear test, Shot Simon, had emitted more radiation then originally anticipated. On May 16th, the test was again delayed because of unfavorable weather conditions. The winds would not hold up on May 19th, when the 32 kiloton nuclear device was finally detonated. The general direction of radioactive fallout blew across the United States, reaching as far as Ne w England and as far south as North Carolina. The officials at the Nevada test site, with very little knowledge about nuclear radiation, had no knowledge that they were in for bad news (Fradkin 1-4). Radioactive chemicals can combine with one another or with stable chemicals to form molecules which may be solids, liquids or gases at ordinary temperature and pressure. The radioactive materials may be outside of the body and still give off destructive radiation. They may also be absorbed into the body with air, food and water or through an open wound. They become even more dangerous as they release their energy in close distance to living cells and body organs. They can be incorporated into the tissue or bone. They may remain in the body for minutes, hours or up to a lifetime (Bertell). Being exposed to the nuclear radiation made the downwinders susceptible to disorders they would not have acquired if they had not been exposed. The Center for Disease Control reported a much higher observed cases of leukemiaseveral times the expected rate of leukemia. in the Utah, Nevada and Arizona area in 1961. Many of these leukemia cases were children, who had been born to downwinders (Ball 110). Active And Passive Euthanasia EssayThe monitoring of the instruments should have been more closely looked into. Fifty minutes before Shot Harry was detonated, William S. Johnson, who was in charge of offsite radiation safety, had advised the United States Public Health Service monitors that the area of interest was over a relatively unpopulated area southeast of ground zero. An hour and seventeen minutes after the detonation, Johnson activated monitors in other areas (Fradkin 5). Had all of them been functioning properly, word would probably have gotten out to more people. The location of the Nevada Test Site itself was flawed. A large city, Las Vegas, was nearby. A truck driver passing by Las Vegas said about the Shot Henry detonation, The flash blinded me for a second or two and gave me quite a scare. I have seen the Northern lights oftenbut this explosion made them look silly. In Las Vegas, police headquarters was inundated with telephone calls from frightened citizens and burglar alarms were set off all over town' (Ball 63). A mandatory evacuation of Las Vegas shouldve been implemented. Choosing a secluded site, such as in New Mexico or Wyoming, where the population was smaller would have been a better alternative. Many problems occur at the foundation. If the foundation of a building is not sturdy, it will fall. The selection of the test site was already doubtful, having it in close proximity to a major city. As the foundation was not strong, something tragic was bound to happen, and it did, in the form of downwind. The fallout would never have occurred if the United States wasnt so eager to protect itself from Russia. Was it really worth it, the United States causing the needless deaths of the downwinders just to ensure national security? Some high ranking military officials would agree it was a good decision but to the downwinders who suffer to this day, passing the genes through their family and repeatedly seeing their loved ones die of radiation-related diseases, their answer would ultimately be no. Romeo And Juliet: Various Types of Love Throughout the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet various types of "love" are displayed . Benvolio believes women are interchangeable, while, at the beginning Romeo bel ieves love is pain. At the beginning Juliet does not even have a definition of love. Paris's and Lady Capulet's definition of love is in appearance. It is obvio us that Shakespeare wants the audience to believe that the only "true" or "real" love is the love that exists between Romeo and Juliet. The first type of love the audience is introduced to is the "interchangeable" lo ve of Benvolio. According to Benvolio, a man should "love" a woman for only the duration of their relationship. If their relationship should end, the man should feel no grief. If the woman rejects the man initially, he should still feel no grief. In either situation, the man should simply start a relationship with anot her woman. Benvolio's definition of love shows the audience two things about Ben volio: he is a womanizer and he has never before experienced "true love." The next definition of love comes from Romeo, but before the time he met Juliet. According to his definition, love (or, rather, not returned love) is pain. He h ides from the sun due to the "love" he feels, and does not act like "himself." I believe Romeo is both right and wrong: not returned love is pain, but Romeo doe s not truly love, as he is merely infatuated by a woman. The next definition of love comes from Juliet, who, before meeting Romeo, did no t even have a definition of love. She appears not to know what love is, and, for that matter, does not seem to care. She remains ignorant until she meets Romeo. Another type of "love" we are exposed to during the same scene is the love of Lady Capulet. Lady Capulet believes love comes from appearance, both physical and political, and has nothing to do with emotion. She shows this when she speaks favorably of Paris's looks and his nobility. She also shows that she does not love Capulet when she publicly denounces him. The Nurse's opinion of love coincides with that of Lady Capulet. Paris has a similar view of love. His "love" for Juliet appears to be pure, but his reason does not. He loves Juliet for her appearance and nothing else. He regards her more as property than as an individual. He is also selfish in his "love." When he believes Juliet is dead (in Act IV) he seems sorrier for his own loss than Juliet's apparent loss. He "loves" Juliet as much as he can love anyone, but his love cannot be considered "true love" because of his selfishness. Finally, in Act II, the audience sees what is defined as "true love" in our society. This "love" is the love that grows between Romeo and Juliet. The definition of "true love" Shakespeare provides the audience with states that all the other characters' definitions of love are wrong. It also states that when two people are in true love, there is no pain unless they are permanently separated. It shows that lovers are not interchangeable, and that love transcends appearance. It proves all except one other "love" in the play wrong. It also shows that real love is not affected by distance or convenience. When two people are in "true love" they are not selfish to one another, do not care about appearances, and cannot live without one another. I agree with this definition of love (all except that without one another the lovers cannot survive). Romeo and Juliet's love for one another also goes beyond one other thing: names. It shows that names do not matter. In our society the difference in names would be equal to two people of different races. The people would come from racist families in a modern day remake of the play. The last example of love in the play is parental love. This is shown in Act V scene iii. Lady Montague dies due to separation from her son. Capulet, Montague, Lady Capulet, and even the Nurse shows that they love either Romeo or Juliet in t his way. In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet many types of love are shown. None of them are wrong, as the word "love" is subject to interpretation, but it is obvious that Shakespeare did not have this in mind when he wrote the play. Shakespeare shows us that the only type of love worth
